Dear Mr. Trump, Please Don’t Take Away our Freedom

First of all, I would just like to remind everyone of the year, that it is in fact 2017. Hello. Welcome to the 21st century, where women and African-Americans are allowed to vote, freedom of speech is encouraged and women have the right to their own bodies.

But let me just take us back a few decades….do you remember in the 1950’s when women were dying because they were using ‘back-alley’ abortion methods?

Well, guess what? Over the next year, you may notice the back-alley ways of America become a tad bit more crowded.

Republicans have taken measures to defund Planned Parenthood. For those of you who don’t know about Planned Parenthood, a health care provider that has been around for the last 100 years, was “founded on the revolutionary idea that women should have the information and care they need to live strong, healthy lives and fulfill their dreams — no ceilings, no limits.”

Now this is a topic I have to write about because we need to voice our concerns at times like these.

Planned Parenthood is under attack like never before. Sign your name and tell extremist lawmakers you stand with Planned Parenthood and are ready to fight to protect access to care for all who seek it.

During Trump’s presidential campaign he said, “I would defund it because of the abortion factor, which they say is 3 percent. I don’t know what percentage it is. They say it’s 3 percent. But I would defund it, because I’m pro-life.”

And now, our nightmares have come true. The senate have voted 51-48 in favour of defunding Planned Parenthood due to the fact that it is adding to the deficit. Um, hello, we’re talking about building a wall between Mexico and America, which according to an internal Department of Homeland Secretary document, would cost £21.6 BILLION!?

What is more important here? The safety and care of women in America, or a wall that will separate families (more than 2,700 people were found dead near the wall) and kill wildlife (breaking 36 laws including environmental protection and historical laws and suing homeowners over eminent domain). Again, have we not learned from our past (ex. Berlin Wall, Hadrian’s Wall, Great Wall of China)?

Sadly, the House of Representatives also agreed to it by a vote of 227-198, with only nine Republicans voting against it. Obviously all of the democrats voted against it.

This saddens me, a lot.

Just imagine this scenario back in 2008…….a 19 year-old-girl in her prime year of university with a bright future laid out before her, and she finds out she is pregnant. She decides that she is not ready to be a mother and would rather wait until she is financially stable, finishes university, and has a proper job.

She finds out that typically an abortion costs around $800. She cannot turn to her mom, oh no that would not go down well, her mom’s house just went into foreclosure there is no way she could afford this (you know, back when there was a massive financial crisis…..wait there still is).

There is no father figure to be found. She is on a scholarship and works two jobs, one at Jamba Juice and one at her university working in the photography lab. The money from her two jobs helps her pay for her room in a shared house and other expenses like Top Ramen and pizza (and maybe some beers).

There is no way in hell she can afford $800 abortion! Luckily, she was able to book an appointment at Planned Parenthood, free of charge. As a bonus, she also had her annual cervical check up.

Now imagine this scenario in 2017…..a 19 year-old-girl not ready to be a mother, the cost of an abortion now being around $1,500 mark, however there is no Planned Parenthood to be seen! She is forced to either have a “back-alley” abortion or have the baby. Either way she will lose everything she has worked for in her life.

Now imagine…..a 14 year-old girl who was raped but is too scared and naive to tell anyone. What do you think she is going to do when she realises there is no Planned Parenthood?

Here’s the real kicker, half of all abortions are on women younger than 25, which means that most of these women are unlikely to be able to afford and abortion. More specifically, there are 1 million teenage pregnancies a year, 78% of these pregnancies are unintended, and about 35% choose to have an abortion rather than bear a child, which means there are 273,000 teenage girls who have abortions a year

What’s more is that it’s not just about abortions. When I was in high school I used to get free birth control from Planned Parenthood, no questions asked. So these 273,000 teenage girls wouldn’t even be able to prevent getting pregnant if they had a choice……unless they had a super open relationship with their mom and could tell her that they were having sex and needed to get birth control (likely story!).

Did I mention the cervical screenings and STD testing? Planned Parenthood provides all services to women!

I don’t know where I would be right now if it hadn’t been for Planned Parenthood, but I am so grateful that I had the choice. The choice I needed to make about my own body. I fear that in the coming year, women in America will no longer have this choice.

So please Mr. Trump, don’t take away our freedom.

Planned Parenthood is under attack like never before. Sign your name and tell extremist lawmakers you stand with Planned Parenthood and are ready to fight to protect access to care for all who seek it.

  1. It breaks my heart that this awful man has been put in charge of decisions like this. He really is taking America backward. I hope to God somehow Planned Parenthood can be saved. xx #fabfridaypost

  2. I think the whole situation is so scary. My daughter is 8 and understands how wrong this is. It’s one of those things that are so crazy I don’t think anyone expected that it would actually get passed. Such a sad time.

    stopping by from #fortheloveofblogs

  3. This is such a distressing time for women in the USA. In fact for women world wide. For such a dominant country to take steps backwards like this send a powerful negative message to those countries who still don’t treat women with equality and respect. Trump seems to be doing whatever he damn well likes regardless of statistics and public opinion.

  4. It is a really scary time, I am in shock of what he has done so far in the short amount of time he has been president. I really hope we can fight this one as Planned Parenthood is such an important organisation.

  5. Totally agree, I would have never thought we would have to fight for human rights, completely shocked.

  6. I could go on for days about how much I detest the orange wonder. I totally agree and I’m sad about the state of my country presently and that this was even allowed to happen. So many have said what could he do in 4 years? seriously look at what he has done in 2 months. #bigpinklink

  7. Ha the orange wonder! I can’t believe it’s only been 2 months, I almost forgot he’s been in the news so often. It is scaring me, I cried when I found out he was elected. : (

  8. I tend to keep my political views off of the internet, but even I couldn’t hide my disgust at his election. Thanks for joining #fortheloveofBLOG

  9. It’s really scary to think that we’re moving backwards on this issue. Planned Parenthood provides so many key women’s health services, and all anyone ever focuses on is abortion – though women are perfectly entitled to that service too if they need it. This is just another example of men making decisions about women’s bodies. #DreamTeam

  10. This scares me so much. It will cause the disability and death of so many women. Well done for highlighting this important issue. #DreamTeam

  11. Completely agree, I mainly used Planned Parenthood for birth control when I was in high school, can you imagine what I would do without this??

  12. It’s so scary to think that this is really happening. As you say, this will have such a real effect on the choices women can make and completely shape their lives because of it. Thanks so much for linking up to #dreamteam hope to see you next time 🙂 x

  13. It’s unbelievable. How can they go backwards? Prolife? What about the mother’s life and the life the unwanted child will live?
Brave you for sharing your story.

  14. When I was a teenager I went to one of those places for birth control too. It was really affordable and confidential. I didn’t like that they expected the annual cervical screening but it was definitely to my advantage. I just didn’t appreciate it then. #StayClassyMama

  15. Now he wants to appoint someone to be in charge of Medicare and Medicaid who does not believe that maternity care should be covered under general insurance policies. The assault on women’s health just never seems to end. #stayclassymama

  16. This is really serious stuff. So serious you think to yourself, how? Why? You shake your head in disbelief. I struggle with a lot of the US states attitude to abortion and now the President himself has put his stamp on it. It is really shocking, scary. The implications are horrendous. A great post highlighting the issue. I am left completely incredulous. Alison x #stayclassymama

  17. I’m always a bit wary of talking about my political views in general, but I’m so glad this has been said. Over the last few months in the lead up to the election and since he was (actually) elected, I’ve been flabbergasted that today – 2017 like you said! – there are people who agree with the views of this man. There are enough people, in fact, to get him elected as President! Abortion is an emotive and divisive topic, but as you said, it’s about choice and options. The services that Planned Parenthood provide are wide and varied, and the loss of those services is, I fear, going to result in some serious changes for the worse in American society.

  18. This really is awful! I have no words really. I would sign the form but I doubt I am allowed as a British Citizen. The whole thing stinks of grumpy old man syndrome! #StayClassyMama

  19. It’s hard to believe that in 2017, after years and years of others working so hard to give women the choice that this one man has been given the power to reverse all that has been achieved. Very scary times #stayclassymama

  20. I find it infuriating that this ‘man’ can have so much control over women he doesn’t know, has never met and cannot begin to understand. It’s an absolute disgrace that due to one mans belief women across America could be put in this position. How can anyone be so blind as to the importance of choice. #CoolMumClub

  21. America has some really serious issues, but instead of dealing with those, or even addressing they exist, they are focused on abortions and which bathroom you use. It’s bizarre that it’s not questioned. #Stayclassymama

  22. Even when I was deemed infertile I still couldn’t dispute the need for abortion when necessary, I sit right on the line and could bang on all day but it is a necessity and to force women to back-alley options where they may die is ridiculous. Going backwards is like 1984 by George Orwell. Signed #StayClassyMama

  23. This is so important. Free contraception is so important. It’s about the freedom of women and the equal rights of women. And it’s not just helping their lives. No child should be born into this world unwanted. #StayClassyMama

  24. This is disgusting. I know there are reasons as to why a woman would choose this route and agree that a woman has the RIGHT to choose and to have that removed from her is ridiculous. personally would never have an abortion but I am lucky enough to have that option thanks to the NHS. I truly hope someone gets Trump out of the white house and puts someone in with some sense! #stayclassymama

  25. mr t and his ‘swampster’ cronies are are really wreaking havoc. Thank you so much for writing about this, because it is not just an issue for the US, it is a global issue on equality. This man has to be stopped. Scared, but strongly fighting! #stayclassymama xo

  26. I genuinely cried on both the days of Brexit and the Trump disaster election… what on earth is the world coming to?! I am so saddened by the state of humankind that think that it is right in any way to agree with funding a completely atrocious wall to indulge the wants of a man child over the safety of women. The state of the world is truly worrying. #stayclassymama

  27. This is soooooo mad!!!!!!! In Thailand abortion is illegal, and it ways heavy on my mind what girls here might have to do because of this. But you’re so right – we should be fighting to move forward in developing countries, like Thailand, not going backwards in countries like USA. We should be funding these things 10x over at home and in the rest of the world – so sad! #stayclassymama

  28. Oh gosh this is terrible, takes all the control over your own life away from you. I realise that in cases the girl/women might have put themselves in that situation, but as per your figures these girls are young and we all make mistakes when we are young. Young people need help, advice and second chances, taking Planned Parenthood away mean they would get none of these. This saddens me greatly as well and it seems to be the way of things at the moment. But it means we must fight back, like you’re trying to do. Well done. #stayclassymama

  29. I really hope that by some miracle this does not happen! Unplanned pregnancies surely would cost America more if that became an unplanned for and in need of care child? and what about a persons right to make a decision for themselves I mean if I was really struggling to conclude anything Mr. Trump would be the last person I would go to for some advice!
I find it so sad that in this day and age such a ridiculous man has been -put in charge of one of the most powerful countries in the world and is making such controversial and insensitive decisions. I hope he sees sense, unfortunately I don’t think that is likely.
I feel like I have taken a trip back in time 🙁

  30. A lot of stuff happening in America is scary at the moment and sadly this story doesn’t surprise me either. Well done for writing about something you’re passionate about, I hope it helps raise awareness and gets more people to sign the petition xx #Stayclassymama

  31. Welcome to Ireland, 2017. Interesting that I read this post on a day of marching for women’s rights around our little nation. Abortions are still a crime here. Women do not have bodily autonomy. It’s INSANE. We are campaigning to repeal the eighth amendment to our constitution and we’re hoping that the government will hold a referendum. Church and state are still ridiculously intertwined here. So yes, I can very clearly imagine the scenario in which Trump gets his way stateside. We are living that reality here. In 2017. Madness, right? #stayclassymama
